A look at the causes of fatal car accidents

The Auto Insurance Center has conducted research on every fatal car accident in the United States between 2009 and 2013 to determine the leading causes of car accident fatalities in each state as well as the District of Columbia. The data was obtained from records kept by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In California, fatal car accidents were most often caused by a driver who failed to make a proper turn. Failure to stay in the proper lane was the most common cause of fatal accidents in most parts of the country, however.

In neighboring states Oregon and Nevada, failure to keep in the proper lane was the leading cause of road fatalities. In Arizona and several other states, failure to yield right of way was the most common cause of fatal accidents.

In Alaska, failure to adjust to the surface of the road caused the most fatal accidents. Overcorrecting caused the most fatalities in several states, as did reckless or careless driving. In one state, Louisiana, operating without the required equipment was to blame for the most fatal accidents. Delaware was the sole state where the most fatal accidents were caused by failure to adjust to road obstructions. Weather was a factor in many fatal accidents as well. In many parts of the country, fog caused a high percentage fatal accidents, while crosswinds caused many fatalities in the Southwest.

Regardless of the cause of the accident, those who are injured in a car crash often suffer life-altering consequences as a result. In many cases, victims are required to incur substantial medical expenses and lose income as a result of an inability to work. In the event that the crash was caused by the negligence of another driver, an attorney might assist the victim in filing a personal injury lawsuit seeking appropriate damages from the responsible party.
