The San Diego Fire and Rescue Department and local police officers were on the scene of an injury accident in the community of City Heights on Oct. 22. At about 10:30 a.m., a Nissan pickup truck traveling north on 54th Street proceeded through a red light and struck a Prius that had been heading east on University Avenue.
The man driving the Prius reportedly had his arm severed in the car accident, and someone riding in the pickup suffered minor injuries. There was no word regarding the identity or further condition of either person, but both victims were transported to area hospitals.
According to the police investigation, after the impact, the Prius rolled over onto the driver's side of the vehicle before sliding across the street. A helicopter video showed major damage to the passenger sides of both the Prius and the Nissan.
The unidentified driver of the pickup truck was subsequently arrested. Police suspected the man was driving under the influence of alcohol. The intersection stayed closed for nearly two hours while authorities took witness accounts and continued with their investigation of the accident.
When motor vehicle accidents like this occur and someone suffers serious or life-changing injuries, it may be wise for him or her to seek advice from a personal injury attorney. In many cases, there could be substantial reason to pursue compensation for the damages. Circumstances stemming from an accident such as lost wages or pain and suffering may be enough cause to consider filing a civil action suit against the suspect. A lawsuit is handled separately from any criminal court litigation.
